In the shallow cove
along the sedge,
a turtle crouches on the sandy bottom
peering up.
Still and fearless,
she can wait for a
very
long
time,
holding her breath
against the promise
of the sun.
In the shallow cove
along the sedge,
I crouch within the hard shell
of my canoe,
peering down
between the flickering shards
of the sun.
Waiting
for the dark and silent thing
to move along,
I fear one of us will drown.
